Summer of 1990

Memories of parades, county fairs, band camp, band trips, concerts, rehearsals, fundraising, and state fair is what all the students who participated in band have in common.

Flags unfurl as the band performs at a home football game.

Major music: Drum major Vincent Beck leads the band a home football game while Chad Iliff and Amy Flynn stand at attention.

The Patriot Band started the year off with parades like Redkey, Fourth of July, and Berne Swiss Days, which led to the Delaware County Fair, first place, class A; Jay County fair, second place, class A; Anderson Contest, first place, class A; and the Sweepstakes Award.

Late in summer, the band went to Ball State University for Band Camp to perfect their routine for State Fair.

After the morning show at State Fair, the band waited around for Sweet Sixteen results.

Blowing his horn, Junior Trevor Ford performs the State Fair routine. Alongside Ford, Carrie Axe plays her saxophone.

The band's theme of the performance was a circus. The band finished second place at the State Fair.

The members grew anxious knowing they had performed a good show. Yet it did not end there. Being in the Sweet Sixteen, the Patriots performed with perfection only to miss first place by half a point to come into second place.

The Patriots did not give up there. They went on to win first place in the Bluffton Street Fair and finish the year off at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina's Sun Fun Festival. They received a first place, class A and first in Best Guard.

With a group as large as 145 students, it involved 100% effort from everyone to reach and accomplish their goals.

Those students of the Patriot Marching Band that had special talent showed that they had even more interest in music by joining Jazz Band.

Jazz Band worked hard every Monday night after school from 6:00 to usually about 7:30, but sometimes when they were not satisfied with the product, they would stay later.

Working late hours certainly paid off when this club of musical students went to a contest at Snyder High School and earned first place by performing "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Days of Wine and Roses."

When asked why he joined Jazz Band, senior member Joe Imel responded, "I like playing the drums. It gives me a chance to improve my playing skills in different ways than band. Many members agreed that Jazz Band, because of the different type of music, brought out music skills not used in band class.

These talented students, as a group, performed at many social gatherings such as the Country Club, the Moose, and giving a banquet with the Jazzy Jays.

Students realized after winning first place that by giving 100% they got 100% in return.

With their bright flags the Patriot Guard set off the band's theme. They practiced with the band during second hour and after school.

During basketball season the Guard performed at basketball games. They were responsible for pre-game shows.

The Guard did well in competition. They received high marks at State Fair and they were also named Best Guard at Myrtle Beach Sun and Fun Festival.

Bev Arnold, after fifteen years, stepped down as faculty sponsor. Mr. Humbert commented, "After fifteen years, she was undoubtedly the oldest senior in history."

Setting off the band: Guard members Tracy Sanders and Jennifer Gettinger add a splash of color to the field during half-time.

Clowning around: Junior Mindy Scott and fellow members of the guard perform during half-time at a football game.
